At the IFTM Top Resa trade show, the Cambodian Tourism Board is unveiling an ambitious national strategy. With the historic hosting of the Francophonie Summit, the rise of exclusive seaside resorts, and the development of ecotourism, the Kingdom is establishing itself as a premier destination for couples and families seeking cultural immersion and unspoiled nature.

For decades, Cambodia’s international image was defined almost exclusively by the majesty of Angkor. While the world’s largest archaeological complex continues to captivate and remains a destination worth the trip in its own right this Southeast Asian kingdom is now making a major strategic shift. The goal set by the authorities in Phnom Penh is clear: to diversify the tourism offering and encourage visitors to extend their stays, exploring the many facets of a country rich in unexpected natural and cultural treasures.
At the heart of this charm offensive, the French market holds a pivotal place, rooted in both history and deep emotional ties. Speaking at the IFTM trade show, Édouard a representative of the Cambodia Tourism Board (CTB) outlines the roadmap for a country in full swing, determined to transform the travel experience for visitors from France.

The CTB: the new operational arm of Sardinian tourism diplomacy

To understand this shift, one must analyze the sector’s institutional evolution. Until just two years ago, promoting the destination was the direct responsibility of the Ministry of Tourism. At the direct initiative of the Cambodian Prime Minister, a more agile body dedicated exclusively to communication and global outreach was established: the Cambodia Tourism Board (CTB).
“The CTB was set up to centralize promotion and build a strong image of Cambodia worldwide,” explains Édouard. This specialized unit is now ramping up on-the-ground activities and physical presence in key source markets, foremost among them Europe and the United States. Within this context, France acts as a major driving force for Cambodian tourism in Europe.

The French traveler: a highly appreciated profile cultured and respectful.

The figures confirm this special relationship. Last year, Cambodia welcomed over 136,000 French visitors, making France the leading European source market and accounting for approximately 10% of the country’s total tourism market share. Beyond mere numbers, it is the profile of the French tourist that appeals to local authorities.
Unlike other international visitor groups more inclined toward standardized package tours, the French stand out for their immersive approach often described as “upscale backpackers” or curious explorers. “The French travel extensively and show immense interest in our culture, as well as deep respect for the local people. They love wandering through traditional markets and meeting the locals,” notes the tourism board representative with enthusiasm.
In contrast, American visitors who tend to be older overwhelmingly favor combined river cruises along the Mekong between Vietnam and Cambodia, making only brief, standardized excursions to Phnom Penh or Angkor.

A historic timeline driven by the Francophonie

The year 2026 marks a historic milestone in Franco-Cambodian relations. Next November, Cambodia will have the honor of hosting the prestigious Francophonie Summit. This global event will bring together more than a hundred official delegations from across the Francophone world in the capital.
For the Cambodian government, this summit represents an unprecedented showcase politically, economically, and in terms of tourism. It offers a unique opportunity to highlight the close linguistic and historical ties binding the country to the Francophone community, while projecting the image of a modern, stable Cambodia that is resolutely open to the world.

The ideal itinerary: the perfect balance of culture, nature, and beaches.

To meet the expectations of this discerning clientele, the Tourism Board has outlined an ideal itinerary with a recommended duration of 10 to 12 days. Breaking away from the mold of whirlwind tours, this itinerary offers a subtle balance of historical exploration, ecotourism, and tropical relaxation a blend particularly well-suited to couples and families with children.
A key new feature is the systematic inclusion of a three-night beach extension on the country’s southern coast. Long overshadowed by neighboring countries, Cambodia’s coastline is currently experiencing a remarkable boom. High-end hotels and resorts are springing up rapidly, offering privileged access to stunning white-sand beaches. With their expansive pools and family-friendly amenities, these properties allow families to unwind in the country’s perpetually warm tropical climate.

Angkor Revisited: Off the Beaten Track

Even at the iconic Angkor site, the watchword is now originality and the easing of visitor congestion. The tourism board strongly encourages “less academic” and more playful visits, specifically designed to capture the interest of younger travelers and adventurers.
Options include swapping traditional tour buses for cycling expeditions along forest paths that wind between the ruins, or hiring traditional trailers the famous tuk-tuks for those who prefer to admire the stonework without pedaling. The sheer scale of the archaeological site makes this possible: with over 400 cataloged ruins, Édouard jokingly points out that a traveler could logically spend more than a year in Cambodia visiting just one temple a day.

Ecotourism and exceptional gastronomy: the new pillars

Beyond its stone heritage, Cambodia is revealing its ecological assets. The remote provinces of Mondolkiri and Ratanakiri, located in the eastern highlands, are establishing themselves as sanctuaries for eco-tourism. Here, travelers can enjoy unforgettable experiences observing elephants in their natural habitat. Further inland, the vast Tonlé Sap Lake the true heart of the Khmer water system captivates visitors with its world-class bird reserves and incredible abundance of fish, offering a fascinating glimpse into the lives of lakeside communities.
Finally, one cannot discuss this resurgence without highlighting Khmer cuisine, a culinary tradition that is gaining prestige among the world’s top chefs. The country takes legitimate pride in producing one of the finest peppers on the planet, consistently ranked among the global top three. This exceptional product a true ambassador of the Cambodian terroir has become a powerful vehicle for showcasing the Kingdom’s culinary culture far beyond its borders.

The return of the diaspora: an invaluable human asset

An analysis of the country’s tourism flows highlights another phenomenon rich in human significance: heritage and family-oriented tourism among expatriate communities. Cambodia is witnessing a massive return of second- and third-generation dual nationals, particularly from the United States and Europe.
These young adults descendants of families who left the country during the dark periods of the last century are now returning to walk the land of their ancestors. Far from negligible, this influx injects a unique energy into the sector; it is a form of tourism rooted in reconnection and deep respect, actively contributing to the rebuilding of national identity and local economic vitality.

A sustainable development model in action

By centering its development on ecotourism, the promotion of its agricultural heritage, and the decentralization of travel toward coastal or forest provinces, Cambodia is shaping a vision for the future of tourism. The country rejects the constraints of mass tourism in favor of high-quality experiences that prioritize human connection and environmental preservation.
For French travelers, the Kingdom stands out more than ever as a land of pure emotion, harmoniously blending the solemnity of history, the laid-back charm of its coastline, and the splendor of its wild landscapes.
